How Does it Work
If you are a student in halls of residence you are exempt from paying Council Tax and do not need to notify us that you are a student. If you are a student in private accommodation you must register for Council Tax and then apply for the student discount or exemption using the form below. If all of the occupiers of a home are students, the dwelling is completely exempt from council tax. If all but one of the occupiers is a student, a 25% discount is granted on the council tax bill.
Get student status letter from your university
They might ask for what's called a 'Certificate of student status' or 'Council tax exemption certificate' (often shortened to 'student certificate') in order to prove that you're in full-time education. You can use your Statement of Student Status to prove you are eligible.
